On becoming a grandmother
Once again life has been very busy - I became grandmother to Eric Samuel Spiegelman on July 5 and he is a doll. Can't wait to get back down there to see him again. We had a lot of family things going on and have also been working on health issues, gardening and such. It seems I have to have constant change and must leave painting and try other things from time to time. I don't know if this is the case with everyone but it is with me. To ease back in I've been making jewelry and attempting something different also. I've started taking glass objects - my first was a large Irish Cream bottle - and turning them into art objects in a similar style to my textured abstract mixed media paintings. I'm really happy with the outcome. Will post a photograph soon. I also hope to have some new work on the website as well as here in the near future. Summer is HOT and tends to zap energy for me but in another couple of months that will change. |

It's been awhile - new paintings!
After MANY personal things going on that are not art related and a few challenges I'm finally back to painting more and have completed several new paintings. At times I find it frustrating when I see certain things I just don't understand. Recently I saw a magazine article written for collectors and talking about "collectible" prints - I honestly couldn't see anything special in any of the prints they featured (which were selling sometimes for over $1000 per print!) - I have talked to other artists about this and they agree with me - none of us "get" it! For instance one of the featured prints could be created exactly in this way: Take a plain background and a dark magic marker. Randomly draw several different sizes of circles freehand (quickly) - then connect them with several hand drawn lines and add a few quick dots at random. Then have prints made of this and put a BIG price tag on them! Ge published in a magazine! OK - I'm not exaggerating - that was the entire "work of art"! Someone please explain! Well, at any rate, here are a couple of my latest works. Aspen's Abstract - acrylic on canvas 12 x 16 Rocky Stream - Acrylic on canvas 12 x 16 Nature's Reclammation Acrylic on canvas 12 x 16 |

update I've been SO busy! Many non-art related things have gone on but I'm finally getting back into it! First, some announcements. Starting with the opening on August 1 some of my work will be on display at SoOh Fine Art Gallery in Lincoln, NE and soon I will also have work featured at the shop at Stephen Foster Memorial State Park in White Springs, Florida. As a founding member of the Art League of North Florida I will be looking forward to increased opportunities as well as increasing awareness and appreciation for fine art here in our local area of North Florida. Would like to invite anyone in North Florida who is interested in getting involved to contact me for information on the next meeting which will be July 21 (Thursday) at the downtown Library in Lake City at 7 PM.
I've recently updated my website with most of my newest works so please check it out and tell me what you think!
For anyone who needs help marketing your art as well as other things I would highly recommend the Book "How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist" by Caroll Michels - she has experienced success as both an artist and an artist's consultant and her advice dispells many of the myths that have gone around concerning being an artist. She emphasises the fact that we should not feel we don't have any power! We too often let all other sections of the art world treat us like we are at the bottom of the heap. But WE are the ones that keep galleries, reps, art supply stores, art museums, shows and such in business! I highly recommend her book which contains many pages of resources for artists in addition to good advice! I know it has shown me where I need to make changes!
Here are my latest works, not yet on the website

Too Busy I've found the last few days way too busy to even think straight. Lots of non-art things came up that had to be dealt with. I did finish one of the two oils I was working on. Also "Happiness" (posted earlier) is sold along with another painting from my website. There are other things going on that aren't settled yet but can be quite good. The oil I finished has gotten good reviews - it's a bit different and probably not one that everyone might appreciate - would love to have an opinion. Here it is - "Foggy Chattanooga Below":

Trying to finish!
I'm still trying to finish two oil landscapes and an acrylic collage landscape in a 12 x 36 format with metallic accents - it has so many trees and other tiny details that it is taking forever. Hopefully I will be able to post it here soon. I just tend to get bogged down in some paintings - they are going well but seem to take too long and I get tired and itching to start on something new. I've seen some works that some have done that they say took 60-80 hours and it amazes me that someone can stick with something that long. |

Latest Oil Landscape This is my latest (completed last night) oil landscape - I sold the same scene last year but this is done a little differently .....

I'm finding that trying to promote one's work takes a lot of time away from painting - this is my biggest complaint at present! |

Happiness
I'm stuck at home with the first cold I've managed to catch in years. May be a good opportunity to at least get more painting done. It's COLD outside but sunny. After enjoying the process of creating this abstract with so many layers of oriental paper and colors a little different from the ones most of my abstracts end up with it just looked happy to me - it's large - 22 x 28 - would love comments on it: |

Starting out I've been enjoying a week of doing a lot of painting - several oils in progress and completed several abstracts. I also am enjoying posting them on artwanted.com and fanartreview.com where I'm receiving great reviews - this is a great confidence builder at least! I'm currently ranked as the #4 traditional artist on fanart. If you would like to see more please go to my website at http://www.baraneks.com - there are links to all my art groups there too. If you are an artist yourself these groups might be of interest to you.
This is one of the most recently highly textured abstracts that I've completed - "Consider All Angles" - these involve many layers of oriental papers, sometimes sand, pigments and acrylic medium with metallic accents and they look better in person, which puts them at a disadvantage when seen online.

I welcome comments. I'll post other work as it is completed and look forward to hearing from other artists concerning their work. |
